I like this design. Maybe I'm biased, but he looks like a creature who could be found in WoW. Try to refine the sketches a little more, and then move forward with your color version in a perspective pose.
Before you build him in 3D, you should draw a version that's the same on both sides (for example, with both arms on the ground). That way, you can take advantage of Maya's symmetry tools to model him most of the way, and then alter things to put him in the pose you want.
