Some nice ideas here. This looks like a design that could actually work for your "Awesome Crate" assignment, which will be the first piece of 3D art that you will design and build (after you've built the set of toys, following the tutorials). You might be surprised how nice even your "Awesome Crate" can look once you get the hang of the basic modeling & texturing tools in Maya.
For your semester 3D project, you might consider something a bit larger or with more elements. What about designing & building a set of outdoor furniture that could go with this lamp? Like some type of bench or chair, a firepit or brazier, and a fountain or birdbath?
